How to install Data Packs (and Resource packs!) in Minecraft

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

Here's a quick tutorial on how to install any Data Packs or Resource Packs you may have!

First, locate your .minecraft folder. This can be done by pressing Win+R, or opening your file browser (also known as File Explorer on Windows).

Then, type in "%appdata%\.minecraft". This will send you to the .minecraft folder directly.

If you're doing this from the File Explorer, just click the top bar and write:

C:\Users\[Your computer's account name]\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft

On a Mac, press ⌘ + Shift + G and type ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft.

For installing Resource Packs, go to the "resourcepacks" folder.

Then, place any Resource Pack you have in that folder. Unzip the file if it is zipped.

When you launch the game, you'll have the ability to enable any Resource Packs in the folder. You can do this in a world at any time, or on the main menu.

Installing Data Packs requires a bit more work.

First, select the world you want to install the Data Pack in. You can do this by going to the "saves" folder in the .minecraft folder.

This is because Data Packs change how the game is played, while Resource Packs change how it looks.

You can also install any Data Packs on your computer into the world directly when creating a new one.

The Data Pack should already be enabled when you join the world, but double check by typing /datapack list and checking which packs are enabled, or /reload.

(You'll need the permission to do so if you're on a multiplayer world and aren't the admin or a moderator.)
